Ex-Astros catcher Scott Servais to join Angels as assistant general manager

Former MLB catcher Scott Servais agreed to terms on Friday night to become the assistant general manager in charge of scouting and player development for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Newly-hired general manager Jerry Dipoto, whom Servais will report directly to, made the announcement via a team press release.

The 44-year-old Servais served as the senior director of player development for the Texas Rangers -- a position he held since the conclusion of the 2005 season -- until being hired by the Angels.

During his tenure with the Rangers, Servais' duties included being responsible for the on-field development of all players in the farm system, in addition to instructing the major league catchers.

He was previously the roving catching instructor for the Chicago Cubs and a professional scout with the Colorado Rockies.

Servais, a Creighton University product, helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

Furthermore, the former catcher contributed to a silver-medal performance by Team USA in the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis.

Servais, who was selected by the Astros in the third round of the 1988 First-Year Player Draft, hit .245 with 63 home runs, 319 RBI and 130 doubles over his 11 career major league seasons.

He set the foundation for his career with the Astros (1991-95) before joining the Cubs (1995-98), Giants (1999-2000) and Rockies (2000).

Servais returned to Houston for 11 games in 2001.

Now, he's in the midst of a promising career path, as the former catcher continues to climb the ladder in baseball operations.

"We will hit the ground running in the scouting and player development program to ensure the success of the Angels now and for years to come," Servais said in a statement. "It will be our goal to always have a championship-caliber team for our fans."
