Sum: The whole amount. Parts: pieces or segments of something. When we consider these words individually we often think mathematically perhaps, or in bits and pieces. But, what makes us tick? What compels us to be physical? Emotional? Logical? Irrational? Angie Simmons, Artistic Director of the Denver-based dance company Evolving Doors Dance, sums it all up through movement and music with her premiere work “Sum of Your Parts”.
Opening this weekend at the Dairy Center for the Arts “Sum of Your Parts” is an exploration of how it all comes together, or rather, how we as humans all come together. It is our whole, our sum, in which we are sensory beings. “Our physical tissue, energetic pulse and chemical interactions make us move, react, communicate and emote”, says Simmons. And, through physical connections, text and music the sum comes into whole, illustrating the personal, visceral and touching work that has come to be Simmons and Evolving Doors Dance signature.
“Sum of Your Parts” features the choreography of Simmons, sound scores by Amy Shelley, Costumes by Annabel Reader and lighting by Craig Bushman and Jess Buttery. Performed by a cast of seven exciting, breathtaking movers, they are joined on stage by guest collaborative artists Teri Westerman (founder and director of Spoke N Motion Dance) and Ying Zhu (Assistant Professor of Dance at University of South Florida). Dr. Zhu will perform for the Denver shows only. Denver audiences are invited to join the cast for a post-show reception, November 8th, at Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theater.
