U.S. trials of a vaccine against novel H1N1 influenza virus began Friday with researchers and volunteers at the Eastern Virginia Medical School taking part.
As reported by the Virginian-Pilot, 15 patients received swine flu shots developed by sanofi pasteur yesterday. The study participants, who constitute a small percentage of the 850 volunteers across the country, will receive a second dose of the swine flu vaccine on August 28 and be assessed for side effects and immunity to the H1N1 virus. A second follo-up will patients will occur on September 11.
EVMS had to turn volunteers away from the trial. Other swine flu vaccines developed by MedImmune, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis and CSL Ltd.
Health officials are recommending that people get a standard flu vaccine as early as possible and then receive two doses of swine flu vaccine when it becomes available at the end of September or in early October.
