New study states the supplement improves hand strength, pain and morning stiffness
New research from University Hospitals of Geneva in Switzerland demonstrates the supplement of Chondrotin Sulfate is in fact safe and effective treatment for those who endure hand osteoarthritis.
The American College of Rheumatology estimates that osteoarthritis the most common form of arthritis affects over 27 million United States adults. This form of arthritis produces joint pain and stiffness. Past studies have indicated that twenty to thirty percent of adults have osteoarthritis of the hand.
This single-centered placebo-controlled FACTS trial included 162 patients with hand osteoarthritis who had met the inclusion criteria.
The studies results had shown that those patients in the chondrotin sulfate group had displayed remarked decreases in global hand pain in comparison to the placebo group. The chondrotin sulfate group also had demonstrated remarked hand function and a decrease of morning stiffness as compared to the placebo group.
Dr. Ken Gabay, M.D., with the University Hospital and lead investigator of this trial, stated that Alternative therapies, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), provide similar pain reducing effects, but with considerably more long-term toxicities."
Chondrotin sulfate is a natural occurring chemical which usually is locate in the cartilage around the joints.
In this study Chondrosulf® had been used and is a licensed drug in Europe. In the United States chondrotin sulfate is sold as a supplement and is used with glucosamine.
Glucosamine is extracted from animal tissue such as crab and lobster while chondrotin sulfate is found in animal cartilage like tracheas or shark cartilage.
Glucosamine sulfate is believed to help aide cartilage formation and repair. Chondrotin sulfate helps give cartilage its elastic properties and believed to have an anti-inflammatory effect which aides in decrease painful swelling in the joints. It may also aide in slowing the breakdown of cartilage and aide in restoring cartilage growth.
Dosage for Glucosamine is 1500 mg daily given at 500 mg three times daily.
Dosage for Chondrotin is 1200 mg daily given at 400 mg three times daily.
If using both supplements the same dosing applies.
Please remember that these supplements may not provide sufficient enough pain reduction in all osteoarthritis patients. Many patients find they work best with other non-surgical and/or alternative treatments such as chiropractic and acupuncture.
