Evgeni Plushenko retired on Thursday right before the very eyes of the crowd that loves him. The Winter Olympics fans love figure skating and that’s why it was no surprise that every seat in the building was full when Plushenko hit the ice. However, the figure skating star never started his program. According to NBC Sports on Thursday, the skater tried several moves to warm up before the program started, talked to his coach and went over to withdraw. Then the news that everyone dreaded happened.

Evgeni Plushenko abruptly retired from the world of figure skating.

The Russian skater was heavily favored to win the competition and his time on the ice is always electrifying. However this time, with this competition, he had to make a decision to pass and leave the ice without showing his program to the world. Apparently his injury is so bad that he decided to retire as well.

The loss of Evgeni Plushenko in the men’s program is huge. He was favored to win and now on the day of competition, the opportunity for America or any other nation to win is possible. And the shock of one of the legendary skaters ending his career right before the figure skating fans has saddened much of the world.

The final time that the world saw Evgeni Plushenko on the ice was in Sochi, Russia. He simply skated around the rink to warm up, withdrew from the men’s short program and waved to the Russian crowd who gave him a standing ovation.
