Everyone can make a difference for homeless animals

You can make a tremendous difference in the lives of shelter pets, even if you cannot adopt one. In fact, you can make a tremendous difference in the lives of shelter pets without leaving your own home. There are many facets to any shelter, sanctuary or rescue operation, from office and administrative duties to training, feeding and grooming the pets, to adoption events, community outreach and education, fundraising and more. Individuals with a wide variety of skills are needed to make the lifesaving work possible.

The possibilities for volunteer work that benefits homeless pets are endless. The gentleman in the photo is Tom, who shreds paper which is used by bunnies, chinchillas, guinea pigs and other small pets in several Dayton-area pet rescue facilities and sanctuaries. Tom makes cross-cut shreds which are less likely to be eaten by the pets. These cross-cut shreds are perfect for use in litter pans as well as in digging boxes; the latter provides entertainment and enrichment for these shelter pets.

Do you want to work directly with the animals? Would you enjoy working off-site at adoptathons, seasonal festivals and other events? Maybe retail sales of pet supplies at a shelter boutique such as Meowza! would be your cup of tea. Perhaps you are happier working behind the scenes, helping with paperwork and other office activities. or maybe you’d rather bake gourmet pet treats for the Friends of the Humane Society in the comfort of your own home.

Get involved! To learn more about volunteer opportunities in your area and to choose the type of volunteer work that best suits your needs and interests, visit Volunteer Match or Petfinder for ideas, or contact these shelters in our area:

Start small - perhaps an hour or two a month - until you see how volunteering is fitting into your schedule, and then you can increase your hours from there if you wish.

Become a volunteer in whatever way you find fun and fulfilling, and improve the lives and health of our shelter pets.
