After studying design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Janet (Jan) Lewis went on the road with her husband, jazz artist Ramsey Lewis. While he was on stage, she would occupy her time by hand painting bangle bracelets. Eventually she accumulated 50 designs with her signature dot patterns that led to the founding of Jan Lewis Designs.
