Everybody's answering the question libertarians 'can't answer'

A question posed by Michael Lind on the liberal/progressive/collectivist Salon.com last June seems to have become the "Anti-Libertarian Shot Heard Round the Freedom World."

Under the headline "The question libertarians just can’t answer" Lind asked "If your approach is so great, why hasn’t any country anywhere in the world ever tried it?"

Seemingly everyone, including Libertarian News Examiner, has offered a response.

As recently as November 18 The Old Dominion Libertarian posted Stefan Molyneux's video response and even more recently, December 23, it was still being debated at Facebook Security Experts.

It turns out that the answer is far easier to understand than the question.

Let's imagine that one of Lind's progenitors had stood on the sands of Kitty Hawk and yelled at the Wright Brothers over the roar of their propeller, "If your flying machine is so great, why hasn’t any country anywhere in the world ever tried it?"

Or maybe an ancestor stood outside Karl Benz's workshop in Mannheim, Germany and sneered, "If your horseless carriage is so great, why hasn’t any country anywhere in the world ever tried it?"

Perhaps one of his forebears looked at John Fulton's crazy invention, which some future-blind misanthropes called "Fulton's Folly" and laughed, "If your steamboat is so great, why hasn’t any country anywhere in the world ever tried it?"

It might have even been someone in the Lind lineage who sat down at his rotary phone and called up people named Hewlett and Packard and Dell and Jobs and Wozniak and sputtered, "If your home computer is so great, why hasn’t any country anywhere in the world ever tried it?"

That's right. Every one of those things didn't exist until they existed.

Libertarian societies have existed in the world before and they will exist in the future the same way airplanes, automobiles, steamships and computers came to exist in people's futures.

The difference between the Michael Linds of the world and libertarians is that libertarians are actively working on creating the free, peaceful, voluntary society for Lind's children's futures.

No, it won't be a utopia because coercion, intimidation and fraud will exist as long as sociopaths, bullies, scammers and other freedom-haters like Lind exist.

But it will be a better world, even with curmudgeon philosophical Luddites like Lind standing outside our windows and muttering, "Libertarianism is stupid because it ain't never existed in no society in the world nowhere! Harrumph!"
