Every house becomes a home with the right company...

Jean Cocteau once said: "I love cats because I enjoy my home, and little by little, they become its visible soul."

King St Cats in Alexandria, Virginia is an orphanage that undersands this all too well. On an average day you can find at least thirty roaming around, playing, sleeping and generally doing what cats do. Each one is wonderful in its own way, and each has its own soul which stands out as you sit among them. At the moment, five in particular are being highlighted as special souls in need.

Cory is eleven years old, but still as active as in his younger days. This long-haired grey boy was given up by his family when he decided that he was less than pleased with the new dog. He also prefers to be an only cat, but has spent time around the others at the rescue and tolerated his friends just fine. His foster family loves him regardless of his demands, but regrettably is unable to keep him permanently.

As exotic as her name, Lakshmi is approximately three years old and was semi-feral when brought to the rescue. Thanks to the nice woman who found her and some of the dedicated volunteers at King St Cats, she now allows for a good scratch and pet from her human friends, but would do best in a quiet home. This  sweet "Tabico" is proof that a little patience and a lot of love can fix just about anything.

The big boy with sleek black fur is named Dwayne. Although you would think he is rough and tumble, he is actually very sensitive and did not do well at the free-roaming rescue, so he is now enjoying his time in foster care. Unfortunately to find a new home, it must be one where he is the only furry friend so that he can relax, be happy and give lots of love to his new owners without worry.

Le Ann is a pretty grey and white seven month old. She was born with slight neurological issues which cause her to shake when she walks. This does not keep her from running, eating, using the litter box and generally being a cat. It just means that she needs a little more support in her daily life to ensure that she is safe and happy. She has already has a good start because of all the loving care from her feline and human friends so far.

And finally there is Keller, pictured on the left. This little girl was left in a box at the Falls Church PetSmart. Being partially blind, perhaps from a virus, she is definitely a special needs kitten. Although don’t tell her that because it may upset her and change her spunky and playful personality. Since she is only about six weeks old she is now being fostered by someone who has another kitten that is showing her how the ropes. After all, it can be difficult to know how to act without a mother's guidance.

Every house becomes a home with the right company. Perhaps one of these little souls will provide just that for someone in need of a real home.
