‘EverQuest Next’ officially heading to PS4

Sony has long embraced the idea of MMO gaming on consoles. Even at this moment, fans can play popular MMO titles such as Final Fantasy XIV or DC Universe Online on Playstation consoles. The support of the genre will now continue after SOE President John Smedley confirmed that EverQuest Next was coming to the Playstation 4. VG247 reported on Jan 25 that Smedley made the announcement during a recent Reddit AMA.

When asked about the possibility to see the next EverQuest game on the PS4, Smedley provided the following definitive answer.

Yes. We will absolutely be bringing EQN to the Playstation 4!

This won’t be the first time that an EverQuest title has appeared on a Playstation system. SOE previously released EverQuest: Online Adventures and one expansion specifically for the Playstation 2.

While Playstation owners will be getting a new MMO with the launch of EverQuest Next, Sony Online Entertainment will be shutting down Free Realms later this year on both PC and PS3. Smedley revealed that the idea to run an MMO marketed to children simply proved too difficult as the user base has a very limited spending budget and tends to behave more poorly.

No more kids games. Kids don't spend well and it's very difficult to run a kids game. Turns out Kids do mean stuff to each other a lot.

In addition to working bringing EverQuest Next to the PS4, it was also revealed during the AMA that SOE plans to launch PlanetSide 2 on the next-gen console during the first half of 2014. Additionally, Smedley also revealed that they are working on a new project that will appeal to former Star Wars Galaxies players. No other details were given about this mystery game other than that it will be based upon an entirely new IP.
