Sony Online Entertainment brought heroic characters to Everquest 2 earlier this month. A heroic character, unlike a normal character, starts at level 85, and the game's current level cap is 95. SOE, which also owns the original Everquest and Planetside, announced the feature to compete with World of Warcraft.
World of Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion introduced the death knight as the game's first and so far only heroic class. Everquest 2 developers decided to take the concept one step further than the Blizzard developers did and allow any character to earn this honor. All the player has to do is choose one player per account and get a free upgrade. Additional upgrades require players to spend money.
Sony's sequel to the original Everquest is almost ten years old. Many players have multiple characters, and may be familiar with the mechanics of many different classes. Unlike newer games, where players probably should learn the game mechanics before reaching the higher levels, many of the EQ2 players already know what they are supposed to do.
The heroic character introduction has caused some controversy, but most players have viewed it positively
