'Evening of Art for Autism' first of many Edwards Artist Alliance events (Photos)

Live painting demonstrations, a special live art projection and live music will combines with displays of original artwork and open studios when the Edwards Artist Alliance present An Evening of Art for Autism on March 23.

There will also be a silent auction of original pieces by the participating artists, with 40 percent of the proceeds benefiting local autism charities.

The event is being held from 6-9 p.m. at the Edwards Building located in the northwest quadrant of the Alliance for the Art's 10-acre campus on McGregor Boulevard.

Autism is a complex, lifelong bioneurological disorder characterized by difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communications, repetitive behaviors and social interactions. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability today, affecting 1 in 110 children (more than children diagnosed with pediatric AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined).

The prevalence of autism has increased 600 percent in the past two decades. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

The Edwards Artist Alliance consists of The Union Artist Studios, Studio 201, the Logan Studio and Gulf Coast Atelier, all located on the second floor of the blue, Key West-style Edwards Building next to the Alliance main building. The group plans to produce events involving both visual and performance art elements, including music, literature and the visual arts. An Evening of Art for Autism is the newly-formed Edwards Artist Alliance's first event.
