Heading into Monday evening's game against the New Jersey Devils, the Edmonton Oilers are in need of a complete performance after a lackluster start to the 2013-14 National Hockey League season.
After losing to the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 on opening night last Tuesday, the Oilers were completely outplayed by the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night in a 6-2 loss. In the loss to Vancouver, the Oilers were outshot 22-8 after the first period.
Even the presence of a Canadian Olympian has not helped a franchise looking for its first playoff spot since 2006. Last week Canadian Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield spoke with many Oilers according to Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post. Whitfield has become a close friend of Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins.
The fact Whitfield (who won a gold medal in triathlon at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney) met the Oilers should come as no surprise because Eakins is a health nut and has banned donuts from the Oilers locker room and media section.
But unfortunately for Oilers fans they need a lot more help than just talking to a person that has achieved great success in the past.
