Evelyn Sanguinetti: Illinois immigrant friendly state, but hobnobs with Ted Cruz

Bruce Rauner's running mate, Evelyn Sanguinetti, hit all the right chords in a recent interview with Hola America TV. The interview was the second part of an interview released by Hola America TV. In this interview, Sanguinetti shows strong support for immigration reform, calling Illinois an "immigrant friendly state," but her actions belie her supportive words on the issue. She hobnobs with the likes of Canadian-born, Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who is an enemy of "immigration reform."

It was Cruz that filibustered the bipartisan bill that passed the U.S. Senate by a vote of 68-32, S.744 - Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. It was Cruz that fought against the efforts of the "Gang of Eight," sending out an email and launched a national petition aimed at stopping "immigration reform," according to Radio station KFYO in Lubbock, Texas, at the time to his supporters. "This is urgent. We must stop this Gang of 8 immigration bill, which would give amnesty to an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants with no guarantee of a secure border."

After the bill passed in the U.S. Senate, Cruz lobbied House Republicans to block the bill from ever coming to a vote in pressuring GOP House leadership.

It was also Cruz that has consistently blocked every legislation helping the state of Illinois, including "Equal Pay for Equal Work" and "Minimum Wage" bills, just a couple of examples. Cruz's claim to fame is the federal government shutdown started on Oct. 1, 2013, with the goal of repealing the Affordable Care Act.

The first part of the interview with Hola America TV, didn't go so well, as Sanguinetti fumbled her answer when asked about the role of the lieutenant governor. Sanguinetti said about the role, "Depends on the governor. It’s up to the governor to give us a role. And so with Bruce Rauner we’re going to work as a team. I will be his partner. And wherever he’s not, I will be able to make decisions in his stead. And it’s a great deal for the taxpayer because we’ll both be working hand in hand with one another."

Rich Miller commented that "If she’s gonna have gubernatorial powers, perhaps the Rauner campaign ought to explain what those would be."

The campaign was forced to back pedal and the fact that the campaign had to comment, is a clear sign of problems with her. Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf interpreted the remarks made by Evelyn Sanguinetti as to the role of the lieutenant governor, according to a report by Natasha Korecki of the Chicago Sun Times. "What Evelyn meant is that she and Bruce will be totally in sync that she could walk into any meeting and clearly represent his views on any given issue," Schrimpf said.
