The Calgary Roughnecks weathered an early storm of Mammoth goals to open the game on January 25 and continued to fill the nets on their way to a 19-12 victory over Colorado.
Within the first five minutes of the first quarter the Colorado Mammoth were up 3-0. However, the Roughnecks offense, including Shawn Evans, went on a tear, scoring 8 of the next 9 goals.
Calgary's momentum continues during the second quarter as they took an 11-6 lead into the halftime break.
Colorado's deficit would not be reduced throughout the second half, even with the play of goaltender Matt Roik improving.
The Roughnecks offense was simply too much to handle for the Mammoth defense. Calgary would extend their lead to as many as 8 goals in the second half. Colorado would score the final three goals of the match, but it was way too little too late.
Shawn Evans had a monster game on offense, scoring 13 points (4g, 9a). Assist numbers are often not a marker for a try playmaker because of the second assist rule in the NLL, but this is not the case for Evans in this game. So many times he put passes on a dime to cutters and open shooters, setting his teammates up perfectly.
Adding to the Roughnecks scoring was Jeff Shatter (3g, 5a), Dane Dobbie (4g, 3a), Scott Ranger (3g, 3a), and Curtis Dickson (3g, 2a). Geoff Snider (1g, 2a) added a game-high 15 loose balls to go along with his 79% face-off win percentage.
Leading the way for Colorado was Gavin Prout (2g, 5a), John Grant Jr. (3g, 2a), and Adam Jones (2g, 3a). The Mammoth sent out 6 different face-off guys to take draws, but Ilija Gajic (38% FO) was the only one who won a draw.
