Evangelicals don't believe life begins at conception?

An article was posted earlier today by Jonathan Dudley of The Huffington Post claiming that even the evangelical christians do not believe that life begins at conception. There are many organizations, Christian and non-Christian alike, locally in Arlington, Texas and abroad that use the claim that abortion is morally wrong and life begins at conception. However, Jonathan claims that no one truly believes that life begins at the point of conception.

He begins by claiming that the mainstream Christian groups do not condone violence to stop abortions and abortion clinics, insisting that abortion is morally equivalent to the genocide of millions of children, but violence should never be used to end abortion. The writer says that in the 40 years of what is called the genocide of innocents, 50 million abortions to date. Yet, between 60 percent and 75 percent of all embryos die in the womb and claims that these groups do not show any concern with these natural deaths, but large sums of money are being spent on other natural deaths for better understanding and remedying other natural deaths from cancer, heart disease, and AIDS. Therefore, how could these same organizations believe that embryos are equivalent to fully developed children express no concern with the number one cause of death in human history. He then concludes that since pro-life groups are ultimately uneasy about the topic of abortion, and believe it to be morally wrong, but they still do not really believe that life begins at conception.

This author definitely has some misguided thoughts about what Christians believe and is faulty with his logic in getting to his conclusion. First, violence is not condoned by Christianity, unless in times of war or in self-defense and self-preservation. Second, Christians are split on the death penalty, but death penalty is not murder in the strict sense. God said "Thou shall not murder," not 'kill' as many like to interpret. There is a difference. Third, money is being spent on miscarriage research, but the bottom line is that that is still a natural death. Dying of old age is natural as well, so should we condemn people for not putting research into living forever? Fourth, the slaughter of an innocent human being is murder. Lastly, anyone who has read "Heaven is for Real" knows that life does begin at conception due to his account while in heaven and meeting his unborn sister.

Taking a Kantian view, what if everyone aborted their fetuses? Who are you to decide that an embryo does not deserve the chance to become an adult human being? I suppose our parents were dumb enough to keep us rather than aborting us, and our right to life was and is not our own, but our parents' decision.

Thank you for reading, and I hope this makes you think about your own beliefs.
