A swarm of birds seen over Sacramento County on Friday was caught on video. An estimated 500,000 European Starlings swarm of birds gathered together in a beautiful dance Friday evening as drivers headed home. Many people pulled over to see the shifting formation in the sky.
The bird swarm was captured on video by ABC News10's Will Frampton along Highway 16 in Sacramento County, California on Friday.
"I'm not sure what it is," said Jeff McLeod, one of the drivers who pulled over. "It's pretty crazy, though. At first it looks like a funnel cloud, and then, I don't even know what they're doing," ABC 10 reported.
Dr. Jeri Langham, a professor emeritus of natural sciences at Sacramento State who spent 38 years teaching about birds, said that the roost may be the largest gathering of starlings in the region.
"You wonder why these birds never crash into each other," said Langham. "They just happen to beautifully manage to avoid one another." Although the number of birds in the swarm is difficult to count, Langham estimated 500,000 birds.
The buzz on this video is hot today because many people are fascinated with bird formations, and because it just happened yesterday.
