Medford, MA is home to the new Biocell Center  for research and preservation of stem cells. Biocell Center is a European Biotech company known to be the first of its kind to harvest and preserve stem cells taken from the amniotic fluid around fetuses.

Breaking all sorts of scientific barriers, the company has become the first in the world to extract amniotic stem cells through a process known as amniocentesis and then freeze them by cryopreservation and save them for use at a later date in time.

Now what does that actually mean?

It means that the company has found a way to efficiently obtain and preserve stem cells from pregnant women without causing harm to the developing fetus, therefore over-stepping any ethical limitations to the procedure. The extracted stem cells are then frozen and kept at the facility in case the child (or any related family member) develops a disease later on in life that calls for stem cell treatment.

Stem cell treatments have been successfully used for many years to treat leukemia and other related bone and blood cancers. The opening of the new Biocell Center is a huge development in the advancement of scientific stem cell research. It is the first facility of this type to be opened in the United States and happens to be right here in Boston.
