Etsy is an online marketplace for artisans and crafters; a virtual mall that sells everything and anything one could think of. Want a necklace made from 70s era Fisher Price Little People? Etsy has it. Want a piece of modern black and white artwork made from recycled paper to hang in your minimalist apartment? It can be found on Etsy. How about a totally rad, hot pink kids' chair made from an old skateboard? Yep, Etsy's got that too.
Etsy is one of the definite go-to places to find art, jewelry, furniture and more made from materials that were once used for something else. Here are three shops that can be found on Etsy. All three of the artists/crafters that own these shops are from right here in good ol' northern California.
The Giddy Spinster hails from Berkeley and has some really cool items in the shop right now. Everyone can grow a cactus; but why put it in a boring terra cotta pot. The Giddy Spinster has taken stilettos and filled them with the thorny and spiky plants. The shoes were all once worn on the foot of some woman who probably went home at the end of the day to soak her feet. You can also find The Giddy Spinster on Facebook.
Tanith is a shop that's all about jewelry. This artist is from the San Francisco Bay area and uses guitar strings and other found objects to make wearable art. Tanith carries one-of-a-kind earrings made from guitar strings and vintage sheet music, a steampunk necklace made from old watch gears and vintage nuts and washers, and a bracelet created from silver coins from around the world and miniature silver keys. Tanith is also a featured artist at The Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco and Sonoma Valley Music Center in Sonoma.
Reimagined Remnants and Treasures is the place to go for modern children's clothing items created with vintage or repurposed fabrics. Whether it's a snuggly fleece blanket appliquéd with a retro tiger and zebra or a strawberry sweet romper with a leafy green collar for that sweet little toddler, this is the shop to visit. Reimagined Remnants and Treasures also uses vintage fabric to make aprons in sizes from little girl to grown woman. This Grass Valley crafter also has a blog by the name of Reimagined Treasures.
These are just three of the thousands of artists and crafters that can be found on Etsy. Whether recycling and reusing has become an artform or just a way to help the planet for you, there is no reason to feel alone in the quest to reuse, repurpose and recycle. If you have an Etsy shop or sell your items elsewhere, or know someone who is making a difference in the way they recycle, let the Recycling Examiner know. The Examiner is always looking for innovative and exciting news in the recycling world.
