Etiquette of the wedding dress

  One of the most exciting experiences a woman can have while planning her wedding is finding her wedding gown. When a woman finds her gown, it defines the direction and mood of the occasion. Up until the middle ages, weddings were unions between families, businesses or countries because love was not the foundation of marriage. It was a way to keep wealth within families and assure peace within countries.  This was especially true for the nobility. Wedding ceremonies were an opportunity to flaunt ones wealth. Hence the attire consisted of bold colors, furs, velvet, silks and the finest fabrics available. One common thread, regardless of social status or historical significance is that the the bride, groom and respective family members have always worn their best clothing on their wedding day. Wedding attire has fluctuated in styles and colors depending on fashion trends. White gowns, however, did not become popular until Queen Victoria married Albert of Saxe-Coburg. It is said that she wore white to incorporate lace she already owned. A white gown is symbolic of a Christian gown, and not intended to symbolize virginity. Blue was connected to purity. In modern American times, it is considered traditional that a bride marrying for the first time will wear white. The etiquette of the wedding dress is defined in the type of fabric a lady will choose depending on the season and formality of the occasion.

There are three types of weddings: formal, semi-formal and informal. Wedding formality is contingent upon the time of day the ceremony will be held, location of the ceremony and reception, size of the wedding party and the number of attendees.

Semi-formal:

If the wedding is semi-formal then the bride would wear a long white gown and her veil would be optional.

Informal

An informal wedding dress should be a white or pastel cocktail gown or afternoon long dress.

Spring gown fabrics

* Lace and tissue taffeta

Summer gown fabrics

Should the bride be on a multiple marriage, then it is perfectly appropriate to wear a gown in a color and style of her choosing. It is always in good taste to be considerate of your audience and the time and place of your nuptials.

Finding your wedding gown is a glorious process as it defines the style that  you will be introducing yourself  to your husband to be, family and friends. For many this is a process of discovery. The best way to begin defining your style is to try on dresses and see what color white looks good with your complexion, what style is most becoming on your figure and what gown makes you feel the most happy and alive. It is helpful to journal about your values, what makes you unique and what things are the most important to you. It is helpful to trust your instincts, take pictures, bring trusted family and friends as well as visit a bridal salon that honors you. This should be a safe and beautiful place where you as a woman can unveil, reveal and discover your sacred essence. Once you have found the gown, then the lights go on and the mood of the wedding is set. May you discover your most authentic and beautiful selves.

Many blessing!
