Health Benefits:
Due to high levels of phenolic acids and flavonoids, oregano is high in antioxidant activity. Its antimicrobial properties help fight colds, coughs, influenza, mild fever, indigestion, upset stomach, and PMS symptoms.

While it is a sedative, it should not be taken in large doses. But it is used in mild teas to aid rest, relaxation, and sleep.

Overview:
Commonly known as “the pizza herb,” oregano tastes great in lots of things other than pizza. Whether sprinkled in salads, added to tomato sauces, used in dressings, or included in a meat marinade, oregano’s potent taste and aroma always shines through. Because it is “the pizza herb” and pizza is a very popular food, oregano is one of the most widely-used herb in the world.

There are many different types of oregano. Mexican Oregano is the strongest in flavor. Spanish Oregano and Greek Oregano follow in strength of flavor. Adding to the mix, oregano is often confused for its close cousin, marjoram, which tastes like a milder version of the herb.

How to store it:
Store fresh oregano in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel and it will last up to a week. Chopping and freezing fresh oregano with a little water in ice cube trays with keep the herb fresh for a year. Just unthaw an ice cube in a plastic bag as you need. Dried oregano will last at least six months if stored in a cool, dry place in an airtight container.

Where to get it:
Readily available at grocery stores, oregano is rare as its one of the only herbs that gets a stronger flavor when dried. Nowadays, most stores also carry fresh oregano in their produce department. Fresh oregano branches should be colored a rich green and not limp at all.

Needing only moderately fertile soil, planting your own oregano is easy to do. Plant outside 12-inches apart after all danger of frost has passed.
