ETHEL Quartet and Dusan Tynek Dance Theatre perform Nov. 3,4,5

If you're looking for a night of eclectic chamber music, exciting new music, and modern dance, then check out the ETHEL straing quartet and Dusan Tynek Dance Theatre.

They will be performing November 3,4,5 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center.

The ETHEL string quartet comprises of Juilliard-trained musicians Cornelius Duffalo (violin), Dorothy Lawson (cello), Jennifer Choi (violin), and Ralph Farris (viola).

The quartet has toured worldwide, and their recordings have received critical acclaim. Their self-titled debut was named one of Billboard's Best Albums for 2003. Their next recording, Light, was #3 on Amazon's Best of 2006: Top Classical Editor's Picks.

ETHEL is known for exploring edgy contemporary repertoire, focusing on works composed after 1995. Their most recent CD release, Oshtali, is the first recording of Native American student works.

Violinist Cornelius Duffalo comes from a musical family. His father is a conductor and his mother is a pianist. Yet his ecumenical approach to music is more an outgrowth of life experience.

He believes that his much of his education came after he graduated from conservatory. After he graduated from Juilliard, he began working with musicians from other genres, and his own style has grown organically out of those collaborations. He also listens to a wide range of music which influences his style.

Duffalo has called New York his favorite place to perform.

As he explains, "I suppose it's partly because New York is my home, but I think it's also that I have found the audiences here to be more adventurous and intellectually curious than anywhere else in the country. In many ways I feel that the open mindedness of the New York audiences makes it possible to move the art of music forward here in a way that just isn't possible anywhere else."

ETHEL's performances at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center will perform some of the quartet's favorite repertoire, including compositions by Phil Kline and Lenny Tristano, as well as a piece that is new to us: "Hold Me, Neighbor, In This Storm." by Aleksandra Vrebalov.

Dusan Tynek Dance Theatre is a Brooklyn-based modern dance company that has received critical acclaim. The New York Times has referred to Czech-choreographer Dusan Tynek as "an undoubted talent."

ETHEL and the Dysan Tynek Dance Theatre will perform November 3,4,5 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center at 199 Chambers Street. Call (212) 220-1460 for tickets.
