Ethan Hawke revealed his new Billy Idol look on Feb. 7 at the New Group Opening Night Party for Clive. Daily Mail reported on Feb. 8 that Hawke made a complete transformation. His look includes black guyliner and spiked, bleach blonde hair.
Hawke's appearance transformed from that of a Hollywood heartthrob to a rocker for his part in Clive, a play he is both directing and appearing in.
The 42-year-old actor and director explained his look to the New York Times by saying,
“I didn’t want to feel like me when I did this role. I was shooting for a Bowie thing, but then I saw a picture of him after I did it, and he didn’t really do his hair like this.”
Clive follows the life of a 1990s songwriter whose self-seeking actions, including those of sensual pleasures, lead to self-destruction. Clive is inspired by the1923 play Baal by Bertolt Brencht.
