Essential oils: Potent healing agents flourish in Utah

If you travel to the small town of Mona, Utah in spring, it would be hard to miss the bright lavender fields against the barren desert. At 1,400 acres, the Young Living Lavender Farm asserts it is the largest natural herb farm in the world.

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in plants, which are often used for medicinal purposes and responsible for the fragrant smells of plants. For thousands of years, essential oils have been used topically, internally and aromatically for their therapeutic benefits.

To ensure maximum therapeutic benefit from your essential oils you should use only 100 percent therapeutic-grade essential oils.

Young Living Essential Oils was founded by D. Gary Young in 1993. Originally located in Riverton, Utah, the corporate headquarters was relocated to Lehi, Utah in 2003. Young Living offers more than 300 essential oil singles and blends guaranteed to be “100 percent pure, natural, uncut oils that maintain the vital therapeutic potency” – a standard they call Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG). Impressively, Young Living owns many of its own farms and distilleries, which allows them to guarantee the purity and potency of their oils from Seed to Seal.

Young Living was recently ranked number three on Utah Valley Magazine’s list of the highest-revenue companies in Utah Valley. According to Utah Valley Business Q, Young Living’s revenue eclipsed $162 million in 2010.

Young Living is not the only therapeutic grade essential oil manufacturer with a physical presence in Utah. dōTERRA Essential Oils, based in Orem, Utah, was established in 2008 by a group of executives that left Young Living to form their own company.

dōTERRA also guarantees the purity and potency of their products. On their website, dōTERRA states, “In addition to being 100% pure and natural, dōTERRA's Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are subjected to further quality testing that ensures the correct composition of the active natural compounds found in each oil.”

A request for dōTERRA's current annual revenue was not responded to. Their website lists 36 single oils and 18 blends.
