Essay contest on Gandhi's walk for nonviolent revolution set

Milpitas, CA (June 27) -- Attention students and teachers, the essay contest is on! Students, teachers,  residents, and all freedom lovers and peace-loving individuals, this is your chance to join the contest and at the same time we'll be walking for a cause!

The India Community Center (ICC) based in Milpitas, is launching an essay writing contest in commemoration of India's great leader Mahatma (meaning "Great Soul")  Gandhi who walked in 1930,  240 miles to start a nonviolent  revolution, leading to India's Independence, that brought the most powerful empire in the world to its knees.

"Every great deed and every impossible journey begins with a single step," a spokesperson of the ICC, the organizer of the contest, said.

How to join the essay contest? All you need to do, the spokesperson said, is register for the "Sevathon 2010 Walk, Run, or Dance" to a Better Community activity which starts at Sunnyvale Park and winds at ICC headquarters in Milpitas.

Sevathon is part of the Indian community's summer activities lined up by ICC.

What are you walking for? The organizers said, "You serve your community by joining our 5K/10K/Half-Marathon." Participants will be walking for these causes: The India Community Center, One School at a Time, Bay Area Telugu Association, Sankara Eye  Foundation, Pakistani American  Cultural Center, Pratham, USA, JEENA, Home of Hope, South Asian Heart Center, Silicon Andiwa, Career Institute Foundation, Planet Read, Indians for Collective  Action, Climate Healers, India Literacy Project, Embrace, BITSAA Silicon Valley, Narika, Akahaya, Patra, One Million Lights, Matri, Bay Ara Tamil Marzam, Foundation for Excellence, Karyada Koota of Northern California, Janyaa, Evergreen Elementary  Community in Action, Indian Institute  of Technology, Kanpur,and Upakriti.

The Sevathon Torch will travel across the Bay Area cities. The ceremony brings the event to the people, giving them a preview of Sevathon and a chance to hear from the nonprofits how the individual  efforts of the walkers/runners are making a difference in the lives of thousands of people.

First torch passing will be on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. It will be held at the India Community Center (Main Lobby) at 525 Los Coches Street in Milpitas.
