Remember how on Monday, there was an article written here about how the Atlanta Falcons just do not make headlines, go to work and get the job done on the field? Apparently, that rule does not apply when you have one of those ESPN talking heads questioning just how good your football team is.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB and current ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer became the second guy over at the “Worldwide Leader of everything Boston” to show the Falcons absolutely no love when responding to a viewer question for ESPN’s “Countdown.”
The viewer asked Dilfer whether he thought that the Falcons were the best team in the NFL. Let’s just say that his response poured some more gasoline on an already smoldering Atlanta Falcons-New Orleans Saints rivalry.
“Heck no,” was his answer. “In fact I’ll say this. I think the Atlanta Falcons might be like the ‘03 Chiefs. Let’s not forget the ‘03 Chiefs steamrolled through the regular season 13-3, hosted the Indianapolis Colts in their first playoff game, no punts in the game and got beat.”
If that response wasn’t bad enough to get Dirty Bird Nation in a tizzy, the former NFL QB who was known as much for his Super Bowl ring with Baltimore as his ability to throw more interceptions than touchdowns, questioned whether the Falcons would even soar in their Monday night matchup against the Saints.
“Hey, listen,” Dilfer added. “I like the Atlanta Falcons. I like the way they’re built, but they’re not indestructible at home. And I think next Monday night we might see that.
“Think of this scenario – Saints go in destroy Matt Ryan’s record at home and then have to come back during the second round of the playoffs for the Saints, I think the saints will beat them twice.”
Oh no, you didn’t?
Not even the normally mannered Falcons could take that one lying down. Enter Roddy White.
“No chance in hell the Aints come into the dome and win once Trent Dilfer,” he tweeted.
Oh no, he didn’t just call the defending Super Bowl Champions Saints by their derogatory nickname? Oh yes, he just did.
Let’s just say that “Who Dat Nation” quickly took note and didn’t take that comment sitting down. White was deluged with tweets back from Saints fans. He even got a Twit Pic of a Super Bowl ring from New Orleans DE Will Smith.
But the Atlanta receiver, who ranks first in the league in receiving yards and first on the team in trash-talking tweets, wasn’t about to back down.
“The Aints fans are so rude we shall see Monday night,” he tweeted before firing back another.
“Y’all fans keep talking making it (worse) for those guys (that) got to guard me cause y’all don't lol,” he said.
Yep, it looks like we’re going to have some fun this week after all.
