With the NFL labor situation looking like it will be resolved in the next few days, today's discussions are turning to free agency and trades that were prohibited by the lockout. The Arizona Cardinals are at the forefront of all trade and free agency discussions due to the team's desperate situation at quarterback. Earlier this morning. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, when pressed, said he expects Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb to ultimately end up in Arizona with the Cardinals.
Kolb, who played in seven games for the Eagles last season and passed for seven touchdowns, is one of the top prospects for any team in need of a quarterback. The Cardinals, according to Schefter and others, are a very attractive destination due to their receivers including Pro Bowler and perennial All-Pro Larry Fitzgerald being the main offensive threat.
Last season, the Cardinals finished near the bottom in offense and struggled with four different quarterbacks under center throughout the 2010 campaign. Derek Anderson isn't expected back, while second-year players John Skelton and Max Hall could benefit from the time spent behind a quality starter.
The Cardinals staff firmly and confidently say the team is ready when the lockout is lifted and finding is a quarterback is easily job number 1. Whether the team trades for Kolb, which many expect, or looks at free agents including Marc Bulger or Matt Hasselback, look for something to happen quickly.
ESPN analyst John Clayton shares Schefters view regarding Kolb joining the Cardinals. In an earlier ESPN.com post, Clayton explains his reasoning for the Cardinals pulling the trigger on a trade. However, until the lockout is lifted and the labor situation finally settled, Cardinals fans and media pundits will just have to be patient.
