In some news that is kind of shocking, but not overly surprising, ESPN is reporting that wide receiver Robert Meachem has re-signed with the New Orleans Saints. "NFL Insiders" on ESPN broke the news on the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, and said that Meachem would be headed back to the "Big Easy."
Meachem was released by the San Diego Chargers in the final cuts just two days ago. He spent just one full season with the team and accomplished virtually nothing.
During his one season in San Diego, Meachem had a mere 14 receptions for 207 yards and two touchdowns.By cutting him on Sept. 1, 2013, the Chargers had to lose out on $5 million in guaranteed money since he didn't make the final 53-man roster.
It was reported early on Tuesday morning that Meachem was close to coming back to New Orleans, but ESPN confirmed it in the afternoon. Financial terms and the length of the deal were not disclosed.
This isn't overly surprising since injuries have done a good job of hurting the Saints' wide receiving corps.
Marques Colston and Lance Moore are in place to start for the team, but Joe Morgan's injury left the Saints lacking a true veteran in the third wide receiver spot. New Orleans has some first and second year players, but Meachem brings veteran quality to the position.
