Escaped fugitive captured in Polk County

An escapee from a Georgia prison facility was captured earlier this afternoon in the area of Friendship Road and Dry Creek Road in Polk County.

Georgia State Troopers came into contact with the suspect, later identified as Winford Reece Ellis, 40, at approximately 1 p.m this afternoon near the Dollar General Store on Mill Street in Cave Spring.

During questioning, Reece wrestled with the officers and even attempted to reach for the officer's weapon. After struggling with the officers, Reece fled the scene on foot toward Polk County.

The officers quickly contacted 911 officials advising them of the situation and that they were in pursuit of the suspect.

Georgia State Troopers, along with Floyd County Sheriff's deputies, Floyd County police, Polk County Sheriff's deputies, Polk County police, U.S. Marshalls, a helicopter unit and tracking dogs set up a perimeter in the area of Hwy. 100 at Dry Creek Road and Friendship Road.

Ellis was recently incarcerated at Atlanta Men's Transitional Center after serving the majority of his sentence for rape and theft by taking.
