If you are looking for a way to get out of the inversion and get some winter exercise with your dog, Mill Creek Canyon is just the ticket.
The canyon is located at the top of 3800 South. The parking lot gets full fast, but overflow parking is a short walk from the winter gate, located just past the Maple Grove parking area. The gate closes on November 1 and opens on July 1. The road is mostly shaded, the air clear of inversion and there are areas of most welcome sun.
Salt Lake County Animal Ordinance allows off-leash dogs in Mill Creek Canyon on odd-number days on trails only. Federal regulations require dogs to be on leash at all times in developed sites which includes trailheads, roads, parking lots, picnic areas, and residential cabin areas. Please protect your privilege of bringing dogs to the canyon by disposing of your dog’s waste properly, keeping your dog from jumping on people or blocking the path of skiers, and not allowing your dog to chase wildlife.
Please be considerate of your dogs paws when walking on the cold snow. The snow can become painful for many dogs. Consider buying booties or wearing a front pouch to carry small dogs when their paws get too cold.
A day fee of $3 per car is charged on your way out.
