Just steps away from Bourbon Street inside the Sonesta Hotel, jazz enthusiasts can escape to watch a live jazz band at the Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse.

Every night at 8 pm, a live band of musicians perform jazz music. This intimate venue is set in a classy, one-of-kind hotel in the French Quarters.

"The Playhouse offer authentic, live jazz 365 days a year," said Tory Robert, communications coordinator for Media Hound, the public relations agency representing Irvin Mayfield Jazz Playhouse, which seats 125.

Established in March 2009, the Playhouse became a regular mainstay at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. "The club’s mission was to bring Jazz music back to world-famous Bourbon Street," Robert said.


Robert shared that three-time Grammy Award-winning Jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater performed on-stage with Irvin Mayfield at the Playhouse during The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Attendees called this performance “the best Jazz concert we have ever seen.”

Irvin Mayfield, 35, recruits his musicians from the local area, Most of the musicians are a part of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Band members will vary but here are the regular musicians: Derek Douget (saxophonist), Michael Watson (trombonist), Peter Harris (bass), David Torkanowsky (piano) and the drummer rotates the most frequently Jamison Ross, Stephen Gordon, Adonis Rose, Jason Marsalis, Darian Douglas, Shannon Powell.

The sounds of Jazz covers these music categories: Traditional Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Modern Jazz, Afro-Cuban Jazz, and even Latin Jazz.


Nightly shows begin at 8 pm. Each set is about one hour with 20 minute set break. The venue closes around midnight during the weekdays and can last longer during weekends.

Tip #2: Irvin Mayfield’s cds and book are available in the Jazz Playhouse as well as online and wherever Basin Street Records are found.

Tip #3: For great seats, visit the venue a little before 8 pm showtime.
