Esa-Pekka Salonen to tour the East coast with Leila Josefowicz

Those who follow my San Francisco site may have noticed that one of the most interesting concerts by the San Francisco Symphony last month took place when Esa-Pekka Salonen (currently Music Director of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London) conducted his 2009 violin concerto.  He composed this work for the young violinist Leila Josefowicz, who appeared as his soloist in San Francisco.  This is “music of the new century” that definitely deserves more exposure;  so I am happy to announce that it will figure in a three-city tour of the East coast that Salonen has planned for the spring.

Salonen will conduct the concerto and Josefowicz with two of the major East coast ensembles:

  1. On March 29–31 he will conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra in their home, Verizon Hall, in a program that will also include Béla Bartók’s “Music for strings, percussion, and celesta” and Claude Debussy’s “La Mer.”
  2. On April 12–14 he will take the concerto to Symphony Hall in Boston, where he will also conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Maurice Ravel’s suite Le Tombeau de Couperin and the complete score that Igor Stravinsky composed for the ballet Firebird.

While in the United States, Salonen will also visit the New World Symphony in New World Hall on the Frank Gehry Campus.  Josefowicz will not join him;  but he will conduct one of his more recent (2011) compositions, “Nyx.”  He will also conclude the concert with the Firebird score;  but he will begin with Debussy’s “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune.”
