Errors in the King James Bible, part 7.
“What we presented during our last session,” stated the Reverend J.A. Layman, evangelist with Sterling Ministries, before The Lay School faculty here in Clinton, Tennessee, “concerning the use of Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, is indicative of the plethora of Bible passages where there appears to be some discrepancy between the King James Version and other translations/versions of the Bible. And the example we looked at of 'êlôn translated as ‘the plain’ in Genesis 12 (and in several other verses concerning the story of Abraham through Genesis 25) is just one rather simple example of an Hebrew word with variant meanings. Some Hebrew words have a dozen or more variant meanings. Now since no original manuscripts of the Scriptures have survived to date, and since the Hebrew word translated as ‘the plain’ in this verse can also mean ‘oak’, ‘tree’, and ‘terebinth’, who can say which of these variant renderings is conclusively the ONE TRUE rendering? From our study, two things are sure: (1) the use of 'êlôn in this and other verses of Genesis 12-25 can be translated as ‘the plain’, ‘oak’, ‘tree’, and/or ‘terebinth’, and, (2) this word cannot be translated as ‘the noble vale’ as the Douay Rheims Bible translates it. And anyone who claims that ‘oak’, OR ‘tree’, OR ‘terebinth’, OR ‘the plain’, any one of these renderings, is wrong, is wrong him/her self and manifesting his/her ignorance.”
