Unbound, by Kay Danella, is one of those books where the world building is great, the ideas behind it really interesting, but the execution somehow fails in the attempt.
Synopsis of the book:
A relic hunter, Asrial stumbles across a rare vase, only to discover that it holds something more precious inside-a djinn named Romir. Aboard Asrial's ship, Romir finds unexpected freedom and unexpected passion in Asrial's bed. But when the vase beckons him back, Asrial must find a way to release him completely, even if it means returning to the dangers of her home world...
What I liked:
I like the fact that it was futuristic.
I like that djinn were created by mystical means.
I like that science and magic somehow worked in this world.
I like how the male character's people actually lived on.
What I hated:
The character interaction, was off to me. Asrial was like the man and Romir the woman. I know that he was a browbeaten, but it got to the point that I was skipping sex scenes, because I was utterly bored with the both of them.
The way his imprisonment was resolve, well it seemed a little too neat and easy. Somehow, to make a djinn is layered in mystery and pain. To unmake one, more sex is required and well again I skimmed through the sex parts.
The whole time Romir took a backseat to everything, and he never actually became the lead male. I also found it strange, based on the character Asrial that she would even be with such a pushover of a male.
And the “conflict” seemed a little convoluted to me. Asrial was a princess, but her family abdicated the throne so to speak, and she works as a relic hunter. And not once in all the time that she has wanted to take back her family’s power yet, other factions wanted to use her perceived power. I don’t know, the bad people seemed so cookie cutter familiar that I truly did not care how the conflict was resolved.
It was not the worst futuristic book I've read and it wasn't the best, just very middle of the road. Overall a C-, because the things I liked kept it from a D.
