Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American writer and journalist who received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for "The Old Man and the Sea," and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

Hemingway's distinctive writing style had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing. He typically wrote about stoical men who exhibited an ideal described as "grace under pressure." Many of his works are now considered classics of American literature.

Hilary Hemingway is an American author and wife to author Jeff Lindsay and daughter of Leicester Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway's brother. In many of her earlier published works she is included as Lindsey's co-author.

Hilary Hemingway is also an award-winning screenwriter and has worked for studios such as Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. She has also written for Interview Magazine, the Miami Herald, and Harper's Bazaar. She has been a producer for Fox News television and a documentary producer/director for Public Broadcast Stations.

Recently Hilary Hemingway was interviewed by Charles Runnells.  She told him about her project to make a film, and with all the local cast and crew in her area of SW Florida, this is great news not only for herself, but for all in the film industry as well.  That is if any filming will occur in the Florida area.

The lead cast has already been chosen, and one of the actors, Andy Garcia, will also be the film's director.  Two other cast members will be Annette Bening and Anthony Hopkins.

Charles Runnells with the Ft. Myers, Florida News-Press interviewed screenwriter Hilary Hemingway, in Cape Coral, Florida.  Hemingway, Hilary that is, is related to that "other" Hemingway - yes,  the famous writer, Ernest Hemingway.

Hilary's current project is to make a film about her uncle, about his last ten years of his life. Andy Garcia is the actor Hemingway is in touch with right now in the pre-production planning for the film. 

The idea is to have the movie be patterned after her uncle's life as well as one of his last characters he wrote about, Santiago in "The Old Man and the Sea."

A screenplay, "Hemingway & Fuentes," is about Ernest Hemingway's friendship with Cuban fishing-boat captain Gregorio Fuentes, who helped inspire and research the book.

Fuentes character will be played by Garcia.  Annette Bening will play Hemingway's wife, Mary.  Anthony Hopkins will portray Papa Hemingway, as well as Santiago. There will be a fantasy sequence where Hemingway imagines himself as the old fisherman who sails out to catch a great marlin just to prove he can do it!

According to Andy Garcia,

It will be a powerful film. We've cracked the back of the story, which was not the easiest story to crack."

Writing the screenplay has helped Hilary Hemingway.  She has been better able to understand her famous uncle and father - Leicester, brother to Ernest.  As they both committed suicide after years of poor health.

Hilary Hemingway never met 'Uncle Ernest' - she was only a few weeks old when he died - but she met Fuentes during three trips to Cuba in about 2001 or 2002.

When Fuentes died at 104, he looked like Santiago.  Garcia and Hemingway hope to start filming "Hemingway & Fuentes" this fall with a release year of 2010.  When filming starts, Hilary Hemingway will likely be on the set, working on what is looking to be the biggest move and movie of her career.

This Cape Coral screenwriter is getting used to Hollywood these days, due to her husband Jeff Lindsay's success. His "Dexter" novels have become a hit Showtime series.

Actors in the general Florida area, I'm sure, hope some of the casting will happen in the SW area, and that some, if not all of the filming locations will remain in Florida as well.  More on that as we follow the progression of Hilary Hemingway's pre-production plans all the way to the red carpet!
