Erislandy Lara challenges Saul Alvarez to fight

After unanimously outscoring Austin Trout to earn the WBA light middleweight title on Saturday night in Brooklyn, Erislandy Lara said “everyone wants to see” a bout between him and Saul Alvarez.

Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) officially defeated the 28-year-old Trout (26-2, 14 KOs) by scores of 115-109, 117-110 and 117-110.

“I did what Canelo couldn’t do,” claimed Lara, 30, a southpaw who defected from Cuba in 2008. “I dominated Trout and I dropped him. Now we have to make a fight that everyone wants to see and that is me against Canelo!”

In actuality, Lara didn’t do anything that “Canelo couldn’t do.”

The 23-year-old Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KOs) beat Trout by a unanimous decision on April 20 to unify the WBC and WBA super world light middleweight crowns.

Displaying dazzling head movement, Alvarez landed thunderous blows throughout the 36 minute affair and floored Trout with a powerful straight punch to the kisser early in the seventh round.

Alvarez, who last vacated the squared circle on September 15 following a loss to Floyd Mayweather, plans to scrap three times in 2014.

A fierce redhead who remains capable of maturing into an elite pugilist, Alvarez is a powerful bruiser whose punches land with resounding thuds.

Meanwhile, Mayweather’s a defensive virtuoso and the reigning pound-for-pound king.

Hence, Alvarez shouldn’t feel ashamed for falling to a legendary prizefighter.

If the Cuban and Mexican do ultimately throw fists, expect Saul Alvarez to knock Erislandy Lara onto Queer Street within nine rounds.
