Erik Morales talks how to defeat Manny Pacquiao

Boxing  -  Former five-time world champion Erik "El Terrible" Morales (50-6) of Mexico suggests that there are several ways to defeat pound-for-pound king Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao (51-3-2) of the Philippines, in an interview on ESPN Deportes.  Morales is the last fighter to beat Pacquiao, who serves as an elected congressman in his native country.  Since "El Terrible's" unanimous decision victory over the "Pacman" in 2005, Pacquiao has gone on a historic winning streak, devouring 11 straight opponents, six of which are possible future hall of famers.  Eight of Pacquiao's victories from 2005 to 2010 have come by way of stoppage, and additionally, have spanned across four weight divisions.

Erik Morales offered his insights on his former foe just as pre-fight hype is building up for the pound-for-pound king's showdown with Tijuana-native Antonio Margarito (38-6) for the vacant WBC light middleweight title on November 13 in Texas.  Margarito's 1,675 total punches hurled at Ghanian Joshua Clottey (35-4) during 2006 is a CompuBox record for a 12-round fight.  Morales was joined by fellow Mexican legend and former seven-time world champion Marco Antonio Barrera (66-7) on the broadcast.

According to Morales:

  1. Manny Pacquiao, under the guidance of trainer Freddie Roach, uses a light jab with his right hand that, as a decoy, does little damage.  This light jabbing style is merely a set up for the Filipino's devastating straight left.  Morales suggests that Pacquiao's habit of lunging forward with his left leaves a big gap with which an opponent like Margarito can make the Filipino icon pay a heavy price.
  2. An opponent would need to create the proper spacing by stepping back on his backfoot, and then counter Pacquiao with a right punch over the top (of Manny's left).  This should immediately be followed by aggressive combinations.  Morales adds that an opponent should periodically back up against Pacquiao.  That enables the opponent to get leverage, and to shock an unsuspecting Manny with the right counter.
  3. An opponent can neutralize Manny's right jab with a left straight counter, by spacing himself to Manny's right side.  (Margarito possesses a 73" reach while Pacquiao has a 67" reach.)  Morales hints that counterpunching Pacquiao is a way to keep him at bay, and that a savvy opponent should continuously circle around to the Filipino's right side in order to hurt him with left counters.
  4. Morales emphasized that timing Pacquiao with precision punches, and using the power of momentum can make the Filipino whirlwind vulnerable.  The Mexican legend suggests that a momentarily staggered "Pacman"  is susceptible to relentless combinations that are delivered accurately.  According to "El Terrible," an opponent needs to keep attacking Pacquiao once he is hurt.  What Joshua Clottey did, by only delivering occasional jabs, was the wrong way to fight Pacquiao.  [ Clottey lost to Pacquiao by unanimous decision in March of this year. ]  Interestingly, Antonio Margarito is known for a relentless attacking style, and is a boxer considered to always come forward and pressure an opponent.
  5. Finally, Erik Morales says that Pacquiao's high punch output makes him vulnerable to a straight right punch.  It would need to be timed perfectly.  The key to maximum effectiveness would be to deliver the blow with sufficient power.  Morales thinks the element of surprise is critical against an elite fighter like Manny Pacquiao.  When the Filipino moves forward, an opponent can bait him by stepping back and hurling a big right.

Asked if he is open to a fourth fight with rival Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales said that he plans to continue his career at 140 lbs and above.  Barrera on the other hand plans to keep on fighting in the lightweight division at 135 lbs.  Barrera added that he does not want a fourth fight with Morales unless the money was very enticing.

"El Terrible" will return to the ring on December 18 in Tijuana, Mexico against an opponent yet to be determined.  The 5'6" Pacquiao will face Margarito, who stands 5'11", on November 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Your boy Floyd doesn't throw combinations. In addition, Floyd doesn't have the punching power to knock anyone out. Remember...you can't change the stripes on a leopard.

how many mexican to take down Pac?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Im getting tired hearing Morales about his win against Pacquiao it is like he is riding from it now. He got lucky because of the cut from Pacman other than that he didnt even knockdown Pacquiao despite the odds. If he was that good how come he had 2 losses against the Pacman. He claims the weight killed him that's why he loss to Pacquiao twice and he didnt even bother to consider that Pacquiao himself struggled to get to 130 lb. limit. I think he should quit now coz he looks pathetic and very slow!

You Mean Chance The Stripes Of A Zibra

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

These suggestions of Morales are based on Pacquiao's performance against Marquez. It's easier said than done mainly because Manny is no longer a one-dimensional fighter. He can adjust in the middle of the fight unlike before. It really seems like Pacman is very beatable but once you step with him in the ring all the advises and training that you got will be gone and you will be back in survival mode.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Well then, I hope you remember his name. And when you do, please ask him to sign the contract first, before he predicts he can whoop my man's ass. You heard?

He's too busy beating up girls.

with all the tips he said to beat manny. nothing works in the 2nd and 3rd fight. it's only effective during their first fight when manny is still raw...

the only way for pacquiao to lose is if fights 2 mexican boxers at the same time on the ring. but even then the odds are in favor of the pacman.

  • Melly Mel 1 year ago

Everyone keeps saying they can find a way to beat Pacquiao. None of the previous champions could figure it out. What makes you think Margacheato can find a strategy to defeat Pacquiao? Morales defeated Pacquiao in their first encounter because Pacquiao had blood running down his eye making it blind for him to see. The only way Margacheat can defeat Pacquiao is if Pacquiao gets a bad cut on top of his eye causing blood to rush down. Nuff said.

Tables turning vs Pedman and Roach.
    1. Cuban Rigondeux turning down Coach Roach for being a big joke, who is trying to get to Gansta Cheato inprenatable skull.
    2. Team Packroids acting hurt, and him attending his congrisman functions, which is a bunch of amateurish and childish caca de Toro
    3. Ariza talking tru his @$$ about the yellow powder, which he better give it to his Peruvians who do not have a boxer on his country, which is not going to work hard head Margarito. Cheato knows all accusations vs Pedman, been training away before they sign the fight , so expect nothing but busted lips and flat nose. Morales aid might help, but Cheato is a Mexican Burro that just go forward, kicking butt.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Morales may know "some" ways of defeating the Pacman, but what they are forgetting is that the Pacman also knows a million ways of busting all of their asses.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Unluckily for him, he didn't figure out Pac in their 3rd fight. Pac evolved and trained, he just stayed to his style and did not adapt (expecting Pac to be the same fighter thrice), therefore the lazy lost. He didn't know where Pac's punches are landing first, before, he just waits for the left hand fake, parry it and counter punch then stays away from Pac's left hand. But, he lost in the third fight, you can even see the huge "?" in his face when he got knocked out, Pacs punches are coming from random angles and random timing, it's so obvious in the last fight Morales was always looking for Pac's right straight hand lead to counter and stay away for the huge left hand, But he ate a lot of right hand lead and hooks. The body shots changed the fight, that's how Pac was able to reach his head, it's like combo + Body punch- combo + body punch then suddenly combo then a head punch (he got knocked out with his hands down trying to cover a body shot). You see, it's simple, the more you train the more you improve. This Morales Technique is like an obsolete technology that needs to be sold for a $1 in a garage sale.

Shut up Morales, I remember you where in the hospital the night Pac beat your ass. Pac even gave you flowers. An inch more it could have been a funeral. Morales - "Ok, Margarito, do it like I did and you'll be like me".

erik with all these comments on how to beat pacquiao, too bad is didn't materialize on their 2nd and 3rd fight.

  • jhoe23 1 year ago

hey el terrible if you know how to beat the Pacman, how come you didn't beat him thrice instead he beat you up in your 2nd and third encounter forcing you to give up during the 2nd and third fight? if you really know how to beat him, you should have won those three fights instead he knew how to beat you the 2nd and third fight with you... you are really el terrible, you have a terrible opinion about him...

Leopards have spots...anyways, boxing fans are forgiven for mistaking a zoological fact; unfortunately, not so for people claiming to be fighters but instead ended up beating women and children.

Morales was right though, the Pacman can be beaten. Everybody can be beaten. Nobody is unbeatable. But how? We will know if Margarito has found a way. This makes this fight a lot more interesting, don't we all think?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

There's a certain undefeated grand rapids native that can do these 5 things with perfection...if only I could remember his name...however, i also forgot that this grand rapid native won't fight this so called pacman.. hence, this 5 things stated above won't be applied.. only in my dreams..

So why morales lost twice to manny if he knows how to him?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

All of us have a plan. However, the plan doesn't always go accordingly. It is the way of life. You shouldn't ask such a dumb question.

  • egg0000 1 year ago

Moralez shouldn't think he is an EXPERT!!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

If Morales can't beat pacman he sure does have the in sight to beat pac. Follow what he did Marg and you'll fall under the same result. Viva Mexico!

  • PACMAN-THE EATER 1 year ago

the association of lost fighters against ONE MAN "The Pacman" is giving tips and fight strategy to Margarito how to beat Pacquiao under F. Roach fight plan. That's very interesting to find out on Nov 13, if these Coalition of Forces (lost fighters + sparmates) can stop Pacman to make another world record.
Pacman on the other hand, has countrymen behind him as the Prayer Army when he fights.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Morales was day dreaming when saying those things. Let's forgive him, he also lost his mind after getting all punches from PACMAN.

  • Roger Rabbit 1 year ago

Morales is still sourgraping! He could have lost the first fight with the pacman if he did not HEADBUT him. All the so-called strategies he is recommending are useless against the Pacman. He used them 3 times, hatton, marquez, barrera, dela hoya, cotto all did - NADA...ZILCH, ZERO, WALA! HE SHOULD JUST STAY RETIRED!

  • KOWatcher 1 year ago

Remember Hatton, thats what he did and resulted to be unconcious on the 2nd. Margarito now can taste what a gloves with Plaster of Paris do when hit!!!

  • el terible 1 year ago

i remembered when hatton comment bout pacman's same move everytime left hook roll under lol. he already know pac s move but that left hook almost killed him

ha ha ha! damage goods na si erik - brain damage!
One thing about Manny that morales forgot, Pacquiao is already streetsmart and Roach and Ariza further made him to an efficient fighter . . . streetsmart - meanng Pacquiao can also adopt and adjust instinctively to "feed on his prey". Pls note that tactic erik used in the 1st fight and the same formule he used on the 2nd and 3rd fight - and he lost terribly on the two last outing. . . . hello morales - you are delusional . . . Manny Pacquiao grew - you did not!

  • Mighty Duck 1 year ago

Morales should did that when he fought Pacquiao in their 3rd fight. Morales, Dela Hoya, Marquez, Hatton and other boxers that Pacquiao had vaquished cannot accept that Pacquiao are outclashed and demolished them.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

They made him fight at a weight that was uncomfortable for him.

  • husnat 1 year ago

er how come morales lost twice in his bid to fight at 135 lbs if he was weight drained when he fought pacquiao?

  • stryker 1 year ago

actuall these tall fighters are sissy . . . they think they can carry their advantage being tall and natural strength by being naturally bigger - so they starve their selves to make it to a more lighter division to fight midgets. they are afraid to battle it out in their natural weights. paul williams is the number one sissy of all. he should be fighting klitchko not midgets. williams should be fighting Haye or Briggs to prove he is special - BUT he is not!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

thats how pacman wants... drain weight his opponents in order to secure a fight. Its either you must be slow or drained the opponents.

  • pacfan 1 year ago

enough of that weight drain issues. when pacman fights on a catchweight, he is climbing on a certain weight division. so it is not that pac is draining a fighter to his [pacman's] natural weight but they are meeting on a weight "advantageous to neither of the fighters". and this catchweight should not be lesser/greater than 2 weight classes from both figthers' natural weights. get it? you remember one fighter pushed his opponent to climbed 2 weight classes and come in 2lbs heavier at weigh-in? now that's the one who's legacy is in question, isn't it?

  • asdsadsa 1 year ago

this things morales said was the pac-man he fought before not the pac-man that deafeted delahoya hatton cotto and clottey

  • Manny Niyut 1 year ago

i think margarito should also wink his eye when he's down the canvas like morales did. and re gayweather, we know he's nor ready to fight pacquiao. he is too gay for him. duhhhhhhh !

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Margarito will need his plaster to beat pacquiao. I think it's fair vs a world P4P King. Marg won't stand a chance. Too slow period. He will go down like Fatton!

  • Morales got fat 1 year ago

    MOrales got fat

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

    Just Like Hatton....HMMMMMM ? ! ?...I Wonder

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Well your implying that all his opponents were weight drained or uncomfortable with there weights. Then how come all these so called hall of famers agree to fight him in a catch weight when on first hand they knew the agreed weight limit. Upon being beaten to submission they all cried out that they have been weight drained. Stupidity isn't it!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

The fight against Cotto was the only catchweight to date, stupid.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I know how to beat pacman but you gotta posses the following abilities.
    >Speed
    >Footwork
    >Stamina
    >Precission
    >Power
    >100 punches per round
    >Iron chin
    >Defense
thats how you beat pacquioa, but who has all those abilities? None so therefore he cannot be beaten. Not until he slows down. Got it! So please try to train and obtain all of those abilites until then let them all fall and crumble.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

HAHAHA BECAUSE PACMAN ALWAYS FIGHT SLOW, WT. DRAINED, COMING OF LOST FIGHTER.
PACMAN NEVER FIGHT A BOXER WITH SPEED AND SLICK FIGHTER.

HE DUCKED MOSLEY, BRADLEY, MARQUEZ, BERTO

PACMAN IS TOO CHICKEN SH*T TO FIGHT THESE BOXERS.
THAT WHY ARUM AND ROACH PICK SLOW ASS BOXER FOR MANNY
