The Erie Canal Park in Camillus will be celebrating its annual Towpath Day with history on "The Erie Canal and the Civil War", on Saturday, August 9, from 10-4. This is a family event at the historic Camillus Erie Canal Park located just off DeVoe Road in Camillus.
The park spans a section of the Erie Canal that features the only working Aqueduct in New York State. The park has walkways and trails as well as places to put your canoe or kayak into the water and spots to fish.
Starting the activities will be Camillus Solvay/Geddes Rotary 5k walk / race starting at 9 A.M.
This will be followed by featured Civil War demonstrations by the 12th NYS Regiment Civil War Reenactment group. Also on hand for the event will be Jack Baylis, the well known portrayer of Abraham Lincoln who will recite the Gettysburg Address.
In addition to the activities there will be a steam engine exhibit at the Steam Engine Museum that is located on site and across from the Sims Store on the Canal. Both will be open for this special event.
There will be wagon rides and boat rides across the aqueduct as well as demonstrations, vendors , Kids Stuff, a specail Make and Take - Home Depot, ice cream making, a Petting Zoo, and Daisy the famous Erie Canal Mule.
Be sure to come out and enjoy great food and great music featuring the Blue Grass Diamond Someday, and Dixieland Jazz by the Soda Ash Six.
There is Free Admission and Free Parking at the DOT garage located on DeVoe Road.
