If you are traveling in the northeast or live in the New England area, at noon on Sunday, August 23, 2009 you may want to make a family stop at the world-famous Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art to meet one of the best-selling children’s book author/illustrators, Eric Carle.

Carle, who is celebrating dual milestones this year – the 40th publication anniversary of his classic and colorful The Very Hungry Caterpillar and his 80th birthday, will be taking home one more honor for his long and illustrious career that has yielded over 70 books to his credit.

Crayola LLC, the company whose name has been synonymous for more than 100 years with supplying children around the globe with art materials, will be honoring Carle with the “Very Hungry Green Caterpillar” crayon.

Sharon Hartley, Vice President, United States Marketing and Sales for Crayola said in a press statement, “This is something we do on very rare occasions to recognize the outstanding contributions individuals have made to inspiring children through their work.” The last person to be honored in this manner was Oprah Winfrey in 2004 when Crayola presented her with her very own crayon - “The Color Purple.”

In addition to Carle receiving a giant five-foot tall “Very Hungry Green Caterpillar” crayon, museum guests will be recipients of their own commemorative standard-sized crayons (while supplies last), plus free caterpillar birthday cake, free samples from Stonyfield Yogurt, free coupons from University Games and special Crayola activities in the Museum’s Art Studio.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar will make an appearance (in costume) and the museum’s west gallery is featuring a special retrospective of Carle’s career: 80/40: Celebrating the Birthdays of Eric Carle and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Patrons will also have the opportunity to meet, greet and take non-flash photos of Carle as he signs books (limit one book from home and two from the museum shop.)
