Eric Cantor's star continues to rise after the November 2010 elections. He was elected as House Majority Leader by his Republican counterparts in the House of Representatives this week. He is the first Virginian to ever hold that title.
Cantor leads
Republican Cantor was elected to this post to help bring about the much needed change and leadership to the House. He ranks second in command to Rep. John A. Boehner of Ohio who will be speaker of the House when the next Congress convenes. The two appear to have a very collegial working relationship.
Responsibilities
Cantor will help determine what bills are brought up for action and he will schedule the daily floor proceedings. He is very likely to have a very different agenda than his predecessors. In a statement to AOL News, he responded,
"[The] Obama/Reid/Pelosi ideological agenda has failed to improve our economy, added to our debt and grown government to unprecedented levels."
Reform to come
Cantor reinforces that Republicans are not blameless and it will take a lot of work to turn things around. He vows to reform how the House of Representatives operates by rethinking how time is spent, and what types of legislation will be discussed.
He is very concerned about the fact that Obama is pushing for a tax increase for people making more than $250,000 annually and he wants Congress to eliminate earmarks. He has an ambitious agenda and a strong desire to continue succeeding as he leads the House of Representatives forward.
