Vince Clarke of Erasure is a musician and songwriter whose footprint is forever impressed upon the landscape of electronic music. Clarke comprises exactly one half of the pop group Erasure; in concerts, he’s the stone-faced keyboardist, the straight man opposite flamboyant vocalist Andy Bell. His contribution to the world of pop music can’t be overstated; Erasure has had huge # 1 hits like “Always” and “Chains of Love”, sold over 25 million records and earned a sizable cult following. But even without Erasure, Clarke’s cultural relevance can’t be denied; he was an original member of Depeche Mode — where his single “Just Can’t Get Enough” was called one of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone — as well as a driving force in other new wave groups such as Yaz and The Assembly. Currently he’s back with Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore in an experimental electronic venture called VCMG, where the style is all soulful blips and eerie clicks and whirrs. Clarke is also a tireless studio remixer, overhauling a number of dance singles for huge club acts like Goldfrapp, The Saturdays, and Franz Ferdinand. With all this under his belt, its no wonder Vince Clarke has earned the title of Godfather of Synth Pop. On Friday January 18th, he comes to Dallas’ Lizard Lounge for a rare DJ set of electronic music and probably more than a handful of his oldies.
