Equipment Used During Investigations – PAPS, Part IV

PAPS, the Phoenix Arizona Paranormal Society investigators, located in West Phoenix, use a wide variety of equipment during an investigation and each has its own specific purpose in finding evidence of paranormal activity. This following information was provided by Rod, the founder of PAPS, who frequently uses these different tools.

Lasers – Lasers are used to find shadows of the spirit that may be present to help the team find out the exact location of the being.

K2 EMF Meter – These are a version of the typical EMF Meter often seen in movies and television shows as a way of communicating with spirits. Lights are present and when a spirit is asked a question, the lights will come on. For example, when a PAPS team member asks if the spirits is a female, the lights may not react but when asked if it is a male, the lights may go on. This would help with providing evidence of what the spirits want, where they are from, and any other valuable information the team may hope to gain. Rod stated that as soon as a spirit is given the “rules” of how to answer the questions, they seem to understand and play along…no matter what language the directions are given in.

Frank's Boxes /Digital Recorders – Typically, during an investigation, digital recorders are used to pick up any background noise or voices that may be coming from the spirit. These are also called EVPs or Electronic Voice Phenomena.  These recordings are played back later, after the investigation is complete, to provide the team with additional information about the spirit. In recent weeks, Rod and his team have been using Frank's Boxes, which are a real time recording of the voices present. In other words, the PAPS team can hear the noises or voices coming out of it as they are happening!

FLIR TechnologyFLIR technology is a type of thermography, or temperature detection. These devices can sense temperature changes in a room and can tell if something hot or cold is present. In one example given by Rod, at an investigation at local museum in the Valley, he noticed a cold presence on the side of the screen measuring for temperature that hadn’t been there in the beginning of the investigation.

Other equipment such as digital cameras, video recorders, infrared technology, and, sometimes, Dowsing Rods are used during an investigation to track a paranormal presence. Ron cautioned that even he does not record happenings in his home, either through a video camera or a digital voice recorder, as these can be doors opened for the spirit to communicate further. He and his team also do not use IN Generators, which are meant to provide the spirit with energy in an effort to make its presence more dominant for the investigators to track. Rod’s belief is that these give the spirit too much energy and he isn’t in the business of making the spirits stronger; only to get rid of them.
