Debunking bucking

Rebellious people may be observed as bucking the system. But what does bucking really mean, particularly for equestrians?

Basically, bucking is a feisty behavior that may be exhibited by a horse. Usually quite suddenly, the horse lowers his head, arches his back and leaps upwards. In the pasture, at liberty, bucking may be considered exuberance, spiritedness and athleticism displayed. However, under saddle, bucking is disobedient and dangerous.

Rodeo riders display their own strength, balance and daring by riding bucking horses. Most equestrians, on the other hand, prefer horses that do not display bucking behavior.

Why do horses buck?

A horse may buck for any number of reasons. All too often, a horse may buck because he is injured or suffering some form of discomfort, such as an ill-fitting saddle or a pinching cinch or girth. Young horses may buck, if the cinch or girth is introduced too rapidly in training.

Perhaps a bucking horse has been pent up too long in a stall and simply possesses an excess of energy. Sometimes, of course, a horse may either be unwilling to train or not ready to carry a rider quietly under saddle.
