Mules may be popular slip-on shoes to fashionistas, or stubborn souls to social analysts, but a mule is something altogether different to an equine enthusiast.

What is a mule?

A mule is a cross-bred equine, resulting from the matching of a mare (female horse) and a jack (male donkey). This hybrid creature, usually sterile, is quite often a steady workhorse with a solid build.

Mules may be used in driving, as sturdy pack animals or even under saddle.

The mule may be contrasted with the smaller hinny, who comes from the opposite parentage (a stallion and a jenny).
