Gadelha, who holds an 11-0 record, was supposed to meet Esparza (9-2) for the Invicta FC strawweight belt on the main card of Invicta FC 7, but she was forced off the card with a bacterial infection.
“Claudia ran a high fever late Friday evening and went to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in her intestines,” Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp stated. “We know Claudia wanted this title opportunity more than anything, and all of us at Invicta wish her a speedy recovery. Tonight’s pay-per-view will go on as planned with two world championship fights and a stacked undercard.”
Esparza and Gadelha seemed to get along fine at Invicta FC 7, but tempers ran high two days later as they took verbal jabs at each other on Twitter.
“@rsburcham: @ClaudiaGadelha_ @CarlaEsparza1 yep, I think it's time for Claudia to move to 125 and fight @BarbHonchak”Would b awesome fight!" Esparza tweeted on Dec. 9.
Gadelha seemed to be offended by the tweet and she immediately fired back.
"@CarlaEsparza1 I fought a lot times in 115lb and had no problem. You scared girl?? U Will have to Fight me!! Dont run!!" Gadelha tweeted.
Esparza's pal, Invicta FC strawweight star Felice Herrig, then jumped into the conversation.
"Carla showed up to fight ! Where were you?! Quit being a bitch! "RT @ClaudiaGadelha_: @CarlaEsparza1 I fought a lot times in 115lb and had no problem. You scared girl?? U Will have to Fight me!! Dont run!!," Herrig tweeted.
Over the course of the next several hours, Gadelha went back-and-forth on Twitter both with Esparza and Herrig.
Gadelha called Herrig a "b**ch" for walking around drunk and "showing her butt," and Herrig fired back with "oh ok @ClaudiaGadelha_ 1. I wasn’t drunk. 2. how is that a b**ch? 3. In America drinking is a “Legal” drug. 4. What are you on?"
Fight fans can kick back with popcorn and watch all the drama go down on all three of the fighters' official Twitter pages.
At the end of the day, all the drama and trash-talking will actually help hype the fight between Gadelha and Esparza, whenever it does go down inside the Invicta FC cage.
UFC champ Ronda Rousey already proved that the rivalry formula helps when it comes to driving the interest of casual fans, so props to Esparza and Gadelha for making their "beef" public.
When it comes right down to it, their Twitter feud might end up fattening up both of their wallets.
