Epic Fail: Life After a Baking Disaster

Baking disasters have afflicted us all, no matter how novice/ professional the baker.  Even the most experienced bakers would admit that within their careers, there have been some epic baking failures.  You could have followed the recipe down to the letter, or could have made the recipe a hundred times before; but for some reason the recipe you were hoping for doesn’t turn out right.

Removal of the Abomination.

Just get rid of it!  It can be heart wrenching (especially in today’s economy) to throw away all of that time/effort/ingredients/money, but this is a necessary step after an epic fail.  This will create the distance needed between you and the disaster to wrap your mind around what just happened.  It is almost as if it never happened…well, almost.

There is no reason to attempt to salvage any portions, just start from scratch.

Coping with the failure.

Failures will come and go, and most of the time they will be minor or easily fixed.

One can drown their sorrows in a large glass of vino (snoot of whiskey; you pick your poison), and start anew.  For some bakers, this might be a good time to “shelf” the disastrous recipe.  Putting the recipe at the back of your index might help cleanse the palette for future baking.  It might be compelling to retry the tainted recipe right away; which let’s be honest here, will only bring more heartache if the recipe fails again.  Take heed this warning!

Know when to walk away for good.

There will always be at least one elusive recipe for every baker.  You could battle for eternity with a nemesis recipe, or just walk away.  Accepting that there may be a recipe that may never be mastered can be an epiphany for some.   Find the right niche for your baking style and get creative.

It can be difficult to accept failures, especially when it is something you are passionate about.  Fear not though; as there will be failures, there will be twice as many Epic Successes.

And try to remember…

“One of the secrets; and pleasures, of cooking is to learn to correct something if it goes awry; and one of the lessons is to ‘grin and bear it’ if it cannot be fixed.”   - Julia Child
