Magic: The Gathering players looking to blast through their decks with some Izzet inspiration are in luck with Return to Ravnica’s mythic blue/red Epic Experiment. Epic Experiment was previewed with choose-your-own-adventure flair by Jenna Helland in today’s Uncharted Realms. With the right deck and some mana, Epic Experiment can create a game winning turn out of nowhere.

Epic Experiment

Sorcery – Mythic Rare

Exile the top X cards of your library. For each instant and sorcery card with converted mana cost X or less among them, you may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Then put all cards exiled this way that weren’t cast into your graveyard.

The Genesis Wave for instants and sorceries, building with Epic Experiment will be… Well, quite the experiment! The possibilities are numerous, and offer players opportunities to refill hands, burn creatures and opponents, wipe the board, or combo win the game from an unexpected position. Look for Epic Experiment to fit in naturally in Izzet based Commander decks and highly experimental constructed fare.

As far as Limited play goes, unless your Izzet guild deck is spot on, Epic Experiment is probably going to be a passed mythic. Building around Epic Experiment seems like it could yield disastrous results, but that may be proven incorrect as Return to Ravnica is unveiled and a cheap Izzet sorcery/instant deck archetype for draft becomes apparent.

There’s every chance of that happening, but even then it’s unlikely that Epic Experiment will command a coveted high pick slot – The burn or draw spell that Epic Experiment might discover will likely prove to be a better selection.

Look for your first chance to dig deep for a treasure trove of spells at Return to Ravnica Prerelease events, going on September 29-30!
