Traveling can create a large carbon footprint, but some airports and organizations are taking steps toward greener methods.

“DFW is leading the way in showing how green power can protect the environment,” said EPA regional administrator Al Armendariz. “Taking action on climate change and improving air quality are two of our highest priorities.”

DFW International Airport is ranked No. 9 on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Top 20 Local Government list of the largest green power purchasers.

“We’re committed to making DFW one of the greenest airports in the world,” said Jeff Fegan, DFW CEO. The airport buys 60 million kilowatt-hours of green power from Champion Energy Services each year.

The wind energy DFW International purchases is enough to meet 20 percent of its electricity needs. Green power generates electricity with a net zero increase in carbon dioxide emissions.

According to the EPA, DFW International’s green power purchase of 60 million kWh is equivalent to removing carbon dioxide emissions of more than 8,000 passenger vehicles per year.
