ECO Western North Carolina is holding its 5th annual Environmental Film Festival at the Hendersonville Little Theater, 229 South Washington Street, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28739, that will cover green housing with a great example of an earthship, as well as sustainable living in general. Hendersonville is just a short drive north from Greenville, South Carolina.
The film YERT, or Your Environmental Road Trip, is a funny but thought-provoking documentary which showcases sustainable living options in the subjects of housing, food, energy, transportation, waste, conservation and many other topics in "a journey across all 50 US states." The film makers, Mark Dixon, Ben Evans, and Julie Dingman Evans (who was told she could not have children and became very pregnant during the one-year trip), interviewed over 800 people to find out what Americans can do and are doing for environmental sustainability.
The three chose a used 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid for their vehicle. Rules for the trip were that they would create less than one shoebox of garbage per month, including recyclables and depositing compost at compost piles; they would never turn on incandescent lights except for the car lights; and they would use about 25 gallons of water per person per day.
The date is Friday, November 8, 2013. Doors open at 6 pm and the film begins at 6:30 pm. The event ends at 9 pm with concessions available to purchase during intermission. General admission tickets are $15, student tickets are $10 with a valid student ID, and tickets for youth 12 years old and under are $7. Tickets can be purchased online at the ECO-WNC website or are available at the door.
YERT has won the Audience Award, San Luis Obispo International Film Festival; Audience Award, EFFY (Environmental Film Festival at Yale); Best Documentary Feature, Costa Rica Film Festival; Best Environmental Documentary, DocuFest Atlanta; Best Environmental Film, Southern Appalachian International Film Festival; and tied with Oscar-nominated Waste Land.
