The National American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) will have its 42nd Annual Conference at the Baltimore Convention Center from Oct 9 to Oct 12. The conference offers field trips and workshops. Speakers will lecture on such topics as educational methods, climate change, and sustainability. Registration is required. The Adkins Arboretum is offering a talk, "Sustainable Lawns-- The Backyard Revolution," on Oct 9 at the Academy Art Museum in Easton. The hours are 5:30 p.n. to 7:30 p.m. The speaker, Tom Christopher, will describe ways to make one's lawn more environmentally friendly by reducing fertilizer use, increasing biodiversity, and protecting water quality. Dr. Gerald Galloway will give a talk, "Is Community Resilience Real or Fiction?" on Oct 9 at the Koshland Science Museum in Washington, D.C. The hours are 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In his talk, Dr. Galloway will discuss why some communities bounce back from disasters like Katrina or Sandy while others do not. He will also discuss the possibility of a community developing resilience. Light refreshments will be provided. The event costs $10.00 per adult and $7.00 per student. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is hosting a talk, "Conservation Science for the Anthropocene: Boundaries, Tipping Points, and System Change on Oct 10 at the WWF Conference Center in Washington, D.C. It will run from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dr. Joshua Tewksbury will describe the forces affecting biodiversity, research into climate change, habitat loss, and invasive species, and how humans can accommodate both their needs and the requirements of the planet. The Youth Birding League will meet at the Irvine Nature Center on Oct 10. The class will run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. A naturalist will teach students how to identify birds and how to bird as a team. Participants will also learn about scientific and competitive opportunities. The class is designed for youngsters between 10 and 15. The class costs $10 for members and $20 for non-members.
